Cycling

LET'S be honest about it: sometimes exercise can be a real pain! In fact, if you're the sort of person who prefers to put their feet up rather than pound a treadmill down at the local gym, who can blame you? The beauty of cycling is that you can get all the benefits of fitness, weight loss, and overall mental well-being without even knowing it. Just take a look at the facts. Regular cycling can contribute towards:

Weight control and reducing obesity

Lowering stress levels

Reducing the risk of heart disease and some forms of cancer

Lowering the risk of developing diabetes

Lengthening your life

Improving strength, stamina and posture

And all that from just a few minutes pedaling on a regular basis! It's no wonder that cycling is one of the UK's fastest-growing pastimes with one-in-three adults now owning a bike.

Case study

Alex's journey to work (Travel-blending)

"I live in Redcar and travel to Middlesbrough every day to work in the town centre. I leave the house at 8.30am and cycle to the train station at Redcar East, which takes me about 8 minutes. I then catch my train at 8.40am, and arrive in Middlesbrough at 8.55am. From there it's just a quick walk around the corner to my office.

The whole journey from start to finish takes me about 30 minutes. I don't have to find a parking space when I arrive, or pay for any petrol. The weekly saver ticket that I use costs me just £10. I was recently told that the same journey in a car would cost me over £40 for parking and running costs! I couldn't afford that! Not on my salary anyway."
