Car Sharing
It's not a new idea, people have been doing it for many years to save money and eradicate the boredom of sitting still in the daily traffic jam to work, the dreaded Christmas rush and the cutthroat battle of getting that parking space!
Simply put, it's where two or more people travel together in the same car. It includes informal journeys where friends, family or colleagues travel together and also those that have come together specifically to car share and that probably otherwise wouldn't have met.
It's completely free to participate and it's amazing to see how much you can save per year just by sharing the journey from one day a week to everyday, and you don't even need a car to take part.
What the public say about car sharing:
"I checked it out thinking I wouldn't find a match but quickly discovered that there was someone travelling the same route as me from Linthorpe and I have been car sharing ever since. I have probably saved myself several hundred pounds already and we now have a third person who has started sharing with us."
Tony
"I started to car share yesterday, with someone who had started a new job and his employers have agreed to match his working hours with mine."
Jay
"If you are lucky, as we have been, the journeys fly by, deep in conversation (or quiet as the mood takes you) and, best of all, lots of laughs."
Lynn
"I have arranged to car share two days in the week. (He) drives Mondays and I drive Wednesdays. It wouldn't work for any more as he works longer hours than I do, but at least it saves two car-days a week. As I cycle Tuesdays & Thursdays, I only have to drive twice a week. On Fridays, it might even be possible to multi-mode with train & bike."
David
"Car-sharing is a great success for me, saving us all money, improving boring car journeys and we are doing our bit to reduce traffic on the roads and trying to help our environment a little."

Case study
Sue's trip to work
"I live in Marton and I set off to work at 7.55am. I pick Ian up from Coulby Newham at around 8.00am, and then we drive to Acklam to pick up Jen at around 8.10am. We usually get parked up, in the office for around 8.30am. We have such a good laugh on the way in; it's much less stressful than doing the work run on my own.
If we all travelled separately, it would cost us 3 times the amount of petrol and parking costs. The journey to work used to cost me about £75 a month. Now that we split the cost between us I save £50 a month.
